Whitening teeth without damage – is that really possible?

It sounds too good to be true: getting rid of tooth discolorations that are several years old in 30 minutes. The result is immediately visible and there are no side effects. The teeth are white and you go through life with more confidence. But is that really true? And how can it be that the teeth are not harmed?

Teeth whitening at home: it depends on the active ingredient concentration

As teeth whitening became a trend in Germany a few years ago, there was little knowledge about how it actually works and whether this method is really safe. The result: Guidelines were established to protect consumers, which are still effective today.

These guidelines for over-the-counter teeth whitening products apply throughout the EU and mainly refer to the active ingredient concentrations. Thus, the products containing active ingredients (such as the OnlySmile Teeth Whitening Gel) contain a maximum of 0.1 percent hydrogen peroxide.

This value was not chosen randomly, but is based on study results that have examined the harmfulness of peroxides on dental and oral health. A concentration of 0.1 percent or less in cosmetic teeth whitening products is considered very safe. Therefore, teeth whitening systems can be used at home by anyone without concern.

Everything considered, there is no evidence that teeth bleached at home suffer damage. The prerequisite for this, of course, is that the products comply with EU regulations.

Great results: easy and safe with the right exposure time

In teeth whitening products, only a very small amount of hydrogen peroxide is contained. The fact that such good results can still be achieved is related to the exposure time of the gel.

If applied as recommended for 30 minutes with the addition of LED light, discolorations can be gently lightened. The natural whiteness of the teeth will become visible again. If the discolorations are very strong, the application can be performed twice in a row. This is especially recommended for coffee, tea, and red wine drinkers.
