Warum Natron als Hausmittel zur Zahnaufhellung ungeeignet ist

Why baking soda is unsuitable as a home remedy for teeth whitening

In recent times, we have received an increasing number of inquiries about the cosmetic effects of baking soda. This article will focus on the teeth whitening effect of baking soda and why we would advise against using baking soda as a home remedy.

What exactly is baking soda?

Natron is a naturally occurring salt, which is also known in technical terms as sodium bicarbonate. Due to its cleansing abrasive effect, it is typically used in households as a cleaning agent.

Why should baking soda have teeth whitening properties?

Sodium bicarbonate as a salt has a natural, abrasive effect. One could almost say that sodium bicarbonate acts like a scouring agent. So if you brush your teeth with sodium bicarbonate, they will appear whiter afterwards.

In this abrasive effect, however, lies the greatest disadvantage of baking soda.

Why baking soda is unsuitable for bleaching

This abrasive effect is what can cause significant damage to the teeth in the long term. Why?

Through the abrasive effect, long-term use leads to sustainable changes on the tooth surface, which are sharply criticized by experts.

Teeth that have been brushed with baking soda for an extended period are damaged on their surface and therefore significantly more susceptible to cavities than healthy teeth that have not been brushed with baking soda. And cavities are known to be the cause of many other problems in the oral area, such as discoloration, toothaches, and bad breath.

Ultimately, it can be said that in the long term, the yellow teeth that one actually wanted to get rid of with baking soda only become more pronounced through the home remedy.

But why does baking soda promote cavities?

The abrasive effect of baking soda creates cracks in the tooth enamel. However, the tooth enamel is like the top protective layer of your teeth – something you actually want to preserve. Once the tooth enamel is compromised, it becomes much easier for harmful sugar acids and bacteria to attack your teeth and cause cavities.

So what should I do?

If you want to have white teeth in the long term, we would advise against using baking soda as a home remedy. If you still want white teeth without damaging your tooth surface, it's worth taking a look at the OnlySmile Teeth Whitening KitThere, unlike baking soda, only UV light and a dentist-recommended bleaching agent, hydrogen peroxide, are used, which has no long-term negative effects on your teeth or gums.
