Der „Instagrammable“-Look perfektioniert

Perfecting the "Instagrammable" look

In the world of social media, such as Instagram, it is important to present oneself well. For this, a specific term has even been coined: "Instagrammable." This describes all the settings and changes one can make to enhance a photo. So that the photo is also suitable for Instagram. We have compiled some tips to help you optimize your photos for Instagram. And all this without technical know-how or endless hours of practice.

With the phone, take good photos

The phone has become the most used device in the Western world since the mobile revolution a few years ago. As the camera quality continues to improve, more and more people are using their phones instead of professional quality for their Instagram shots. Advanced software allows for extensive adjustment options and post-processing modifications. However, our goal is to provide an innovative guide that can be used even without technical prior experience.

Step 1: Use natural light

Lighting and exposure are the foundation for every good photo. As a little mnemonic, it is worth remembering to rely primarily on natural light. This also includes using the phone's flash to simulate natural light. Most of the time, phone flashes are not strong enough to adequately illuminate a subject. Instead, it is advisable to make use of street lamps or illuminated shop windows even in low light conditions. Below you can see an example image of what natural light can look like.

Also, when editing a photo that is too dark afterwards, it should be noted that the photos should not be overexposed. Nothing can save a photo that has been overexposed.

Tip: Tap with your finger on the brightest spot on the screen when taking the photo. On iPhones, you can also long press and then swipe down or up before taking the photo to adjust the brightness of your photo. On Android phones, usually just tapping on the brightest spot in the photo is enough. This will automatically adjust the exposure.

Step 2: Shoot your photo at the right time

Your photo will then have a strong contrast ratio with warm colors. Below you can see a comparison of the two lighting conditions. On the left is the photo with harsh midday sun and little contrast, on the right is the warm photo with a lot of contrast.

Step 3: Pay attention to the composition of your photo

The composition is another important building block for a successful photo. Composition refers to the arrangement of individual image components. Both shapes and contours, textures, colors, and other elements are suitable for this purpose.

TipUse the grid view on your phone. This divides the photo into a 3x3 grid and helps you align the objects correctly.

The composition also includes the focus of your photo. In most photos, the subject is in the center of the photo. To make a photo more exciting and visually appealing, try not to place the subject in the center. It is important that the photo is balanced by another object in the center. Below you can see an example. On the left is the photo with the subject in the center, on the right is the photo with the so-called "Golden Ratio“. Additionally, the gaze direction of people can also be played with. If they do not look directly at the camera, the photo automatically appears more interesting and natural.

Step 4: Use image details to draw attention

There are many ways to direct the attention of a viewing person. The previously mentioned gaze out of the picture is one possible method. It evokes the thought process: Where is the person looking? This creates curiosity. Another way is to use the lines present in the image to direct the attention of the viewing person to the target object. Below you can see an example of what this can look like.

The lines shown here all lead towards the woman, creating a wandering gaze. This keeps the attention focused on the object. Here too, the gaze outside the image appears as if the person has been captured in a natural movement. The authenticity created in this way gives the photo charm.
