Some may have heard of teeth bleaching. However, over-the-counter products for teeth whitening at home have not been around for long. And the prices are significantly higher compared to other cosmetic products. This raises the question of what affordable alternatives exist to get rid of unsightly tooth discoloration.
Coconut oil, baking soda, and turmeric: The affordable alternatives to teeth whitening
If you Google home remedies for teeth whitening, you will get a variety of results. We have selected the 3 most prominent ones and briefly described them.
- Oil pulling: Here, a tablespoon of coconut oil should be taken into the mouth and then "pulled" through the gaps between the teeth. After 5 to 20 minutes, the oil is spat out and the teeth are brushed again with toothpaste. Whether a visible success occurs has not yet been conclusively proven.
- Baking soda: In this method, baking soda is sprinkled onto the damp toothbrush and then the teeth are brushed. Some also mix a paste from the powder. All of this costs only a few cents and is supposed to make the teeth appear whiter through abrasion. While whitening teeth with baking soda is said to work well, it can, however, destroy the tooth enamel in the long term. Dentists therefore advise against it.
- The turmeric root: The yellow medicinal plant is said to have a teeth-whitening effect. To unleash this, one should chew the raw root for several minutes while using as many teeth as possible. Turmeric is known for its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties and can contribute to a healthy oral flora.
To find a method that works well for you and is also affordable, you can try different options. However, we advise: stay away from baking soda or baking powder! These substances can permanently damage tooth enamel. Additionally, due to the roughened surface, discolorations can even occur faster than with an intact enamel layer.
If you want to save money while seeing results, we recommend starting with the teeth whitening powder. The ingredients are gentle on your teeth and whiten them evenly. Like all products, you can also find the Powder for teeth whitening on our website.
